St. Mark's Church
St. Mark's Church

St. Mark’s Church was built between 1860-1866 by the architect John Middleton, who also designed other Cheltenham’s churches of this period, such as St. Philips & St. James in Painswick Road or Holy Apostles Church in Charlton Kings. This was his earliest commission and has the distinction of being the only one of Middleton’s churches that was completed as originally intended.

As other churches by this architect, it was designed to be built in stages, as funds permitted. The nave and the chancel were built in 1861 and the parish of St. Mark’s was created in 1862. It wasn’t until the end of 1866 that the slender 150 feet high spire was raised. The transepts were added in the late 1880s.
